Downtown Redevelopment Project

In a departure from Classic Apartments previous projects, the Molino St development presented an opportunity for Alexander Bermudez together with Richard & Eric Arrindell, to revitalize an underutilized industrial space, into new 'Artists in Residence' zoned units.

The original brick structure was previously a manufacturing facility, with a curved timber roof, high ceilings soaring to 25’ in the center, handsome roughly strewn timber arched trusses, with an abundance of windows and skylights and concrete floors, all of which presented a great opportunity for interesting design.

As the re-gentrification of Downtown Los Angeles continues, one trend is becoming increasingly apparent; 'lofts' are becoming more like chic, expensive apartments rather than affordable live/work spaces for artists. In response to this trend Richard Arrindell utilized his experience as a professional photographer to create expansive work areas, designed to function as photographic studios in addition to being living spaces.

The original rudimentary spaces provided an open canvas, to carry out the interior planning and renovations. The rough spaces were transformed into lofts now featuring mezzanines, ergonomic kitchens and bathrooms, yielding a larger open floor plate for the resident photographers, other artists and their trade.

The end result are rental units that, meet all building codes and regulations, however now offer clean well designed twenty first century living, whilst still retaining its rudimentary loft aesthetic.

The Angeles Crest Highway is a two-lane segment of State Route 2 that offers a scenic, secluded getaway. The Vasquez Rocks Natural Park, a 745-acre area in northern Los Angeles County, has served as a location for several sci-fi television and motion picture productions.

The rocks were formed during the Cenozoic Era, approximately 25 million years ago when the sandstone rocks were uplifted at a picturesque angle, showing their jagged red features. The rock formations are part of the San Andreas Fault.

Tiburcio Vasquez, one of California's most notorious bandits, used these rocks to elude capture by law enforcement. His name has since been associated with this geologic feature.

This is a tremendous place to take the family for an outing. Wild, sandstone slabs jut out of the ground at a 45 degree angle, rising almost 150 feet in the air. The rocks are easy to climb, if you bring a good pair of hiking shoes. Parking and use of the park is free.

The World Wide Web has been instrumental to the success of Classic Apartments. In 2003 the original Classic-Apartments.com site was launched, its content, little more than a couple of Photographs, drew many wonderful tenants to our buildings.

In the fall of 2007 Alexander Bermudez, utilized the services of Lainie Liberti and her design firm Jungle [8], to develop a more dynamic web presence for Classic Apartments. In keeping with the minimalist design philosophy of the original, Jungle [8] has produced a website that has far exceeded all our expectations.

We are now pleased to announce the launch of the new Classic-Apartments.com website.

In Los Angeles alone, an estimated eleven thousand men, women and children, live on the streets, including Skid Row and the surrounding L.A. area. As a provider of housing in the community, the homeless in Los Angeles is a social issue very close to our hearts. At Classic Apartments we believe it is our moral duty to help however we can.

Those behind Classic-Apartments.com have taken this responsibility very seriously, by sponsoring the InvisibleMinority.org project. The goal is to humanize the men, women and children who are living on the streets through the use of photography. Finding hope and humanity in the eyes of the homeless, captured through the lens of the camera puts a real face to those who are all to often referred to as a "statistic".

The Louise Street Project

2007 was a good year for Classic Apartments, after acquiring a 12-unit apartment building two years earlier, and spending the first half of 2006 working with our architects, the Glendale Department of Building and Safety, promptly approved our plans.

By July of that year the necessary financing was obtained and we were ready to begin construction. Unfortunately life had other plans, Shai Aloni our general contractor who had been with us from the beginning, discovered a cancerous lump in his throat. After the shock of the news, Alexander Bermudez, assumed Shai’s responsibilities and we finally broke ground in August. Thanks to modern medicine and Shai’s indomitable spirit he has since enjoyed a full recovery!

Seven months later the renovation at 1019 North Louise Street was completed and fully leased. To date this has been our most ambitious project and a delightful addition to our portfolio.
